La Clusaz Ski Resort

La Clusaz ski resort has long been a favourite ski holiday retreat for skiers from Annecy and Geneva. Situated in the Aravis mountain range, La Clusaz is a little gem of a ski resort and not as well-known among British skiers as some of its neighbours such as Avoriaz, Morzine and Chamonix. It’s a compact Alpine town with a respectable 132km of pistes, offering a small-village charm that feels more like an Austrian or Swiss ski resort. When it comes to the village, La Clusaz’s big pull is its traditional atmosphere. The village itself is at 1,100m altitude, but the peaks clustered around it reach above 2,500m, with lifts up to 2,470m.

La Clusaz ski resort is easy to reach – only 50km (about 1 hour’s drive) from Geneva. It’s good for beginner and intermediate skiing and also has an excellent snow record. More experienced skiers will be happy with the variety within La Clusaz. The best route is to first work your way out to the Col de Balme area, overshadowed by the spiky Pointe des Verres (2,616m). It’s a great space with leisurely slopes, several lifts and an easy cable car link to the Massif de l’Aiguille, from which you can ski to the resort’s other peaks and runs.

La Clusaz has something for everyone and a focus on families that many bigger ski resorts seem to forego. The toddlers in your group will be delighted with the tobogganing areas at Les Confins and especially at the Champ Giguet, which is right in the middle of the village.

Overall, La Clusaz is a very well-rounded ski resort, with a combination of great terrain, a good snow record and excellent skiing.

Beginners and intermediates will have a plethora of choices. With most runs coming in the form of wide blues, you won’t be struggling to get down the mountain. Advanced skiers will have a slightly harder time finding more challenging slopes and whilst there are some steeper reds and blacks that are usually filled with moguls, you will want to head over to La Balme to get to the more challenging freeride areas.

Overall, La Clusaz is better suited to skiers due to its large number of mogul paths. However, there are some nice cruisey blues that will be well suited to those who are mastering the basics. There is a terrain park in La Balme which can be enjoyed by freestyle boarders.

Non-Skiers

La Clusaz as a town is on the whole best geared towards its alpine skiers, however, there’s still a nice selection of shops that make for a lovely afternoon spent indulging in some retail therapy in between cosy coffee stops. There is also an ice rink and swimming pool which provide fun alternative winter sport activity options on whiteout days. Non-skiers can also choose to catch a bus to Lake Annecy which has a beautiful old town to wander around.
